The Power of Giving Back: Volunteering for a Cause.

When I moved back to Texas in late 2023, it was the first time in my life that I did not also live with a cat or dog. I had moved in with my younger sister and brother-in-law, and although they like animals, they didn't want the responsibility of one. My brother-in-law is also allergic to cats.
One of the many positive aspects of moving back to Texas is that people seem to take their pets everywhere. I always smile when I'm grocery shopping at HEB and randomly see a dog with their owner.
I'm now aware that having frequent interactions with cats or dogs is good for my mental health. After doing some research, I was able to locate an animal shelter nearby. After attending an orientation and ordering a volunteer shirt, I was ready.
Now I usually try to volunteer once a week. The animal shelter requirement is to maintain at least 3 hours a month. When I arrive, I will say hi to the dogs, but for now I usually take a book and hang out with the cats. I will read until they come to me and want attention.
The following photos are from my time volunteering yesterday afternoon. From left to right is Sabrina Carpenter, Juno and Carrot, Espresso, Onion, and Nonsense.
